RevenueCat is a cloud-based infrastructure platform that simplifies subscription and in-app purchase management for mobile apps. It lets you manage purchases across iOS, Android, and the web from one place, track user subscriptions in real time, and unify receipt validation across platforms behind a single API. In short, RevenueCat removes the complex, error-prone backend work that a mobile developer would otherwise have to build from scratch just to handle subscriptions.

Without RevenueCat, a developer has to integrate the App Store and Google Play subscription systems separately, validate receipts from each platform on the server side, track which plan a user is subscribed to, and sync that data with analytics tools. RevenueCat turns all of this into something manageable through a single SDK and a single dashboard, so development teams can focus on their actual product instead of subscription plumbing.

Founded in 2017 by Jacob Eiting and Miguel Carranza, and launched through Y Combinator’s Summer 2018 batch, RevenueCat has grown into one of the most recognized names in mobile subscription infrastructure. According to Ahrefs data, the brand term “revenuecat” alone gets over 10,000 global searches a month, which shows how deeply embedded the tool has become as a reference point in the developer community. In this guide, we cover what RevenueCat is, how it works, its pricing, its Flutter and AI integrations, its current alternatives, and our partnership with RevenueCat at Neon Apps.

Who Uses RevenueCat? Real Examples

RevenueCat today powers the subscription infrastructure behind some of the world’s most downloaded apps. OpenAI’s ChatGPT app used RevenueCat and reached number one on the US App Store within 24 hours of launch; the company points to not having to spend time on subscription infrastructure as a key factor in that speed. Photo filter app VSCO used RevenueCat’s Braze integration to build fast winback and upgrade messaging, cutting membership churn by nearly 5%.

Photo editing app Photoroom uses RevenueCat as its single source of truth for subscription and revenue data, and says this helped increase trial-to-paid conversion in Japan by 2 to 3 times and boosted upsell screen conversions by 50%. Credit card optimization app CardPointers’ founder says that within a year of shipping with RevenueCat, he was able to quit his day job to focus full-time on the app, partly thanks to saving around 27% in app store fees through RevenueCat’s Stripe integration. These examples show RevenueCat is a serious infrastructure choice not just for small startups, but for large-scale, high-growth apps too.

How Does RevenueCat Work?

RevenueCat’s architecture is built on three core pieces: the SDK, the backend, and the dashboard. The open-source SDK you add to your app initiates the purchase and sends the receipt from the App Store or Google Play to RevenueCat’s servers. The RevenueCat backend validates that receipt, determines which entitlements the user has, and pushes that information in real time both to your app and to any connected analytics or marketing tools, such as Mixpanel, Amplitude, or Braze. The biggest benefit of this architecture is that security-critical work like receipt validation happens on RevenueCat’s secure servers rather than on the client, which adds meaningful protection against fraudulent purchase attempts.

On the dashboard side, you can track metrics like active subscriber count, churn rate, revenue trends, and trial-to-paid conversion rate, all from a single screen. Through its webhook system, events like a user subscribing, cancelling, or having a failed payment are sent instantly to your own backend or third-party tools, which makes it possible to build churn-prevention campaigns or personalized user experiences.

RevenueCat’s core capabilities roughly fall into five categories: building in-app purchases across platforms with a single SDK (Build), matching purchase data with marketing and ad tools in real time (Acquire), running A/B tests with a remotely configurable paywall editor (Convert), reporting on 40+ metrics in one dashboard (Understand), and reducing churn through automated winback campaigns (Retain). Together, these five layers let a team manage an app’s entire subscription lifecycle, from first purchase to cancellation, from a single platform.

How Much Does RevenueCat Cost?

According to RevenueCat’s official pricing page, the pricing model is simple: it is completely free up to $2,500 in Monthly Tracked Revenue (MTR). Once you cross that threshold, you pay 1% on the amount above it. For companies with high transaction volume or complex business needs, there is also an Enterprise plan with custom pricing that includes volume discounts, custom SLAs, and dedicated support.

In practice, this model means a new startup pays nothing until it is actually making meaningful money. There are no flat license fees, no per-seat pricing, and no per-transaction surcharges, which is a big part of what makes RevenueCat appealing for apps at the MVP stage or for small teams.

The free plan itself is full production-grade infrastructure, not a limited trial: full SDK access, real-time subscription tracking, server-side receipt validation, REST API access, and third-party integrations are all included for free, so a budget-constrained team gets the complete product rather than a stripped-down version. The Growth Tools (paywalls, funnels, A/B testing) can be used alongside RevenueCat or with your own infrastructure, in which case you are only charged on the conversions generated through those specific tools.

RevenueCat and Flutter Integration

RevenueCat officially supports Flutter developers through the purchases_flutter package. This lets you set up subscription management for both iOS and Android from a single Flutter codebase, without writing separate platform-specific logic. RevenueCat’s centralized subscription infrastructure pairs naturally with Flutter’s “one codebase, multiple platforms” philosophy.

In practice, this integration can cut the time it takes to add subscriptions to a Flutter app from days to hours. The typical flow looks like this: you first define your products in App Store Connect and Google Play Console, then group them into an “offering” in the RevenueCat dashboard, and finally use the purchases_flutter package to read the user’s current entitlements (CustomerInfo) and control what the paywall screen shows accordingly.

The biggest advantage of this approach is that you never have to write separate subscription logic for iOS and Android; the platform-specific complexity of StoreKit and Google Play Billing is abstracted away behind RevenueCat. At Neon Apps, we regularly use RevenueCat with Flutter; it is a combination that gives fast-growing subscription apps a reliable, easy-to-maintain backend.

RevenueCat’s AI (MCP) Integration

In 2026, RevenueCat took a significant step toward AI-powered development tooling by launching an official MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. MCP is a standard that allows AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT to securely access external tools and data. RevenueCat’s MCP server works directly with tools like Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code Copilot, and OpenAI Codex CLI, and exposes 26 different capabilities that can be managed through natural language commands.

This means a developer can manage their subscription configuration, like creating a new package or granting a user a promotional subscription, without ever opening the RevenueCat dashboard, just by instructing their AI assistant. The MCP server is cloud-hosted (at mcp.revenuecat.ai) and authenticates either with a RevenueCat API v2 key or OAuth. Its tools cover project and app management, product and offering management, directly changing product status in App Store Connect and Google Play Console, and even AI-assisted paywall creation through a tool called Rico. This made RevenueCat one of the first platforms in subscription management to offer AI-native configuration, a sign that the company continues to lead not just on infrastructure, but on developer experience too.

RevenueCat Alternatives

“What are the alternatives to RevenueCat” is a question that comes up often, especially among growing teams looking to optimize cost. While RevenueCat remains the market’s most established and widely used player, several strong alternatives have emerged by 2026. Adapty offers a more generous free tier than RevenueCat ($5,000 MTR instead of $2,500) and a visual paywall editor that lets marketing teams run paywall experiments without developer involvement. Qonversion stands out with a $10,000 free MTR threshold and a lower 0.6% rate, plus an attribution feature that ties ad spend directly to subscription revenue.

Superwall expanded into a full subscription infrastructure in late 2025, making it the closest competitor to RevenueCat; it tracks revenue through Monthly Attributed Revenue and is free up to $10,000. Which tool is right for you largely depends on your priorities: if paywall experimentation and marketing team autonomy matter most, Adapty is a strong fit; if cost optimization is the priority, Qonversion stands out; and if RevenueCat’s maturity and broad integration ecosystem matter most, RevenueCat is still the safest default choice.

What is worth noting in this comparison is that RevenueCat’s advantage is not only about pricing, it is also about the size of its community and the maturity of its documentation. Years in the market, fast adaptation to every StoreKit and Google Play Billing change, and ready-made integrations with dozens of third-party tools like Mixpanel, Amplitude, and Braze all reduce risk, especially for teams without deep in-house subscription expertise.

Neon Apps and Our RevenueCat Partnership

At Neon Apps, we are an official RevenueCat partner; we have previously shared this partnership and the event where we met the RevenueCat team in New York in our blog. Through this partnership, we provide direct support in setting up RevenueCat integrations with the latest features, including MCP, following best-practice standards.

RevenueCat on its own is not a silver bullet. Set up correctly, it eliminates infrastructure headaches, but it does not make the strategic call for you on which pricing model, paywall design, or trial length to use. If you are building a subscription-based mobile app, choosing the right monetization model comes at least one step before setting up RevenueCat. We covered whether freemium, free trial, or a straight paid subscription is the right call in our guide Hard Paywall, Free Trial, or Freemium: Choosing the Right Subscription Model, and if you want to test your paywall, our guide on Strategies for Successful Paywall A/B Testing in Subscription Based Apps will help. We answered the subscription-versus-one-time-purchase question in detail in Unlocking Revenue: Subscription vs In-App Purchases for iOS Apps, and for a broader look at monetization models, check out Mobile App Monetization Models: Real Conversion Data 2026.

At Neon Apps, our App Growth and Monetization service covers RevenueCat integration, paywall optimization, and subscription strategy end to end; if you are building on Flutter, our Flutter App Development service also helps you plan the RevenueCat integration into the right architecture from day one. The experience of having worked closely with RevenueCat as a partner helps us get the configuration right from the start, whether you are launching a new MVP or scaling a high-traffic app.
